Research and coaching experience
- I have more than 13 years experience in UX research spanning startups to agencies to large corporates and a large variety of industries through my work at ustwo, ABC, Dovetail and Askable. I have done UX research in Health Tech, Finance, Media and Entertainment, Aviation, Retail, Travel and Government to name just a few.
- I have a real passion for helping people grow and reach their potential. I believe that coaching and thoughtful facilitation are the keys to building great teams. I led the UX design function at ustwo Sydney, taught UX and Service Design at Academy Xi and General Assembly, mentored UX designers at IxDA in London, and I’m facilitating health promotion workshops for ACON Health. I’ve also completed a Diploma of Coaching with The Life Coaching College in Melbourne and am trained in interpersonal, mindfulness and communication modalities to help people with their personal growth. This experience gives me a solid understanding of facilitation, group dynamics, and individual coaching.

My approach to UX and people

Design Squiggle by Damien Newman
The Design Process is like this squiggle. The first part represents the Research & Synthesis phase where from noise and uncertainty emerge patterns and insights. This leads into a stage of clarity and focus, often through vision concepts and prototypes. Finally the design is finessed through iteration and detailed design.
In my work I spent most of my time towards the left-hand side of the squiggle, defining problems, finding patterns, discovering opportunities and charting a path forward.
I have been the go-to person for Research, Analysis, Strategy and Process Facilitation. For me these areas translate to the underlying attributes: curiosity, clarity, planning and enablement.

These qualities also make me an excellent manager and coach for teams and individuals. I apply my curiosity for a person’s motivations and challenges and create clarity with them. Together we set meaningful goals and I work to enable them in pursuing them. This is a key part of my management philosophy.
